Interactive holographic displays: the first 10 years

چکیده

This chapter reviews the first ten years of interactive electro-holographic displays from its first instance in 1990 through innovations in computational approaches and optical modulation schemes. The enormous bandwidths required to image three-dimensional (3-D) holographic images interactively are examined, along with descriptions of techniques used to overcome the limitations placed upon fringe computation and optical modulation. Included are the techniques of diffraction-specific fringe computation, computational stereograms, and bipolar fringe computation, as well the scanned acousto-optic modulation technique used in early display systems.

Merging Graphics and Holograms

This article outlines how display holograms can be combined with interactive computer graphics. Digitally projected light is used for replaying the holographic content synchronized to the rendering of autostereoscopic or stereoscopic graphics. Modifying the local intensity of the projected light beam allows creating consistent occlusion and shading effects between both—graphics and hologram. Th...

Holographic bandwidth compression using spatial subsampling

Subject terms: electro-holography, holographic computation, holographic bandwidth compression, diffractionspecific, fringelet, hogel vector Abstract. A novel electro-holographic bandwidth compression technique, fringelet bandwidth compression, is described and implemented. This technique uses spatial subsampling to reduce the bandwidth and complexity of holographic fringe computation for real-t...

Interactive Holographic Stereograms with Accommodation Cues

Image-based holographic stereogram rendering methods for holographic video have the attractive properties of moderate computational cost and correct handling of occlusions and translucent objects. These methods are also subject to the criticism that (like other stereograms) they do not present accommodation cues consistent with vergence cues and thus do not make use of one of the significant po...

Projection-type see-through holographic three-dimensional display

Owing to the limited spatio-temporal resolution of display devices, dynamic holographic three-dimensional displays suffer from a critical trade-off between the display size and the visual angle. Here we show a projection-type holographic three-dimensional display, in which a digitally designed holographic optical element and a digital holographic projection technique are combined to increase bo...

Haptic Holography: A Primitive Computational Plastic

We describe our work on haptic holography, a combination of computational modeling and multimodal spatial display, which allows a person to see, feel, and interact with three-dimensional freestanding holographic images of material surfaces. In this paper, we combine various holographic displays with a force-feedback device to render multimodal images with programmatically prescribed material pr...
